Preschool

With Language Arts at the forefront of our Preschool curriculum, instruction is designed to develop all aspects of students’ language knowledge in both English and French. Key focus areas include oral communication (speaking and listening; expressive language; phonological awareness, etc.), as well as the foundations of reading (letter recognition; story comprehension and retelling; plot sequencing, etc.) and writing production (letter writing; phonetic spelling, etc.). Teachers use a variety of authentic reading materials and resources to facilitate students’ acquisition of the early literacy skills needed for success beyond Preschool.

With a focus on exploring new mathematical concepts in context, students will develop a sense of representing and comparing numbers, as well as describing shapes, recognizing patterns and understanding spatial relations. In addition, our curriculum aims to cultivate a sense of curiosity in our young learners about the world around them. Our emphasis on the scientific method guides students to develop questions, make hypotheses and observations, engage in hands-on experiments, and compare and describe their results.

Across all subject areas, social and emotional learning serves as the common thread in our curriculum. From day one in our Pre-K 3 program, we aim to build the foundational skills needed to help students become productive and respectful members of the classroom and school community. Students are given ample opportunities to practice social and emotional skills, observe and experience exemplary behavior models, and establish and reinforce positive relationships with their peers and teachers.

Activities are designed to develop both Fine and Gross motor skills, which may include practicing hand-eye coordination such as throwing and catching balls, as well as exercise activities such as running, jumping, dancing and participating in obstacle courses. Through cooperative games and activities, students are taught important collaborative and interpersonal skills in context, such as practicing good sportsmanship and teamwork.

In addition to the core academic subject areas, the Preschool curriculum encourages students to unlock their creativity through various forms of expression, including visual arts, music and dance. Students attend dedicated arts and music classes and are also exposed to elements of the arts through interdisciplinary projects in their content area classes.
